Something I forgot to add earlier. I have gained tremendously by avoiding all news coverage, which I only started about 6 weeks ago. Without realising it I had become a news junkie as a result of working at home in front of the computer and the news is designed to keep you in a permanent state of anxiety.
For the last 15 years I have consistently failed to get anywhere near enough sleep, averaging 5-6 hours most nights, but when I dropped the news cold turkey I immediately started sleeping 8 hours a night consistently. The sleep alone is hugely beneficial for your health, but staying away from the news makes you less fearful and anxious about things you cannot even change and usually have no impact on your life.
After a month like this I noticed I was much less anxious and started making better decisions. I would liken news coverage to porn in the way it messes with your mind. If something is really important somebody will tell you about it and unless you are living in a cave you will inadvertently see or hear some of the news, but deliberately switching on the TV or reading papers because of some self imposed need to hear the latest piece of fear propaganda is just not good. I wish I had learned this at 18 rather than at 48.
It's not easy giving up the news like this and the compulsion to keep checking will be strong, but the benefit of stopping is huge. Along with news I include current affairs programs, political commentary and anything similar.
After a couple of weeks your thinking will become more focussed and it's a positive step towards a whole series of more positive habits like practising gratitude every day as a deliberate act. If you do switch on the radio or TV and the news starts you'll find yourself quickly changing channel with a shudder. On a slightly philosophical note I also started to reject the idea of other people telling me what I should be afraid of.
