There were some people doing that with masks back at the beginning. My understanding is that they were arrested and fined. The gov't stepped in and put controls in place.

We were just watching the evening news and it was interesting:

The main focus was on Sunday services (it is late Sunday here). As it seems many churches are still holding services. Some in secret, others not. The gist of the story was an expose on these churches still holding mass and large gatherings, with quotes from gov't officials saying to stop under penalty of punishment. The general public reaction was to put a stop to it until things blow over.

Some churches have gone to online services, but other have taken to having smaller gatherings in peoples homes. The gov't again answers this saying small gatherings of 10 or less is ok, so long as all protocols are being met, meaning hand washings, no exchange of items, etc. But larger ones are cautioned against.

The next story was a round up of all the hoarding and panic buying in US, England, etc. The gist was more along the lines of "Holy shit! Look what these foreigners are doing!" And again the gov't reassuring folks here that there is no need for that sort of thing, supply lines are fine, plenty of rice, etc. Shots of supermarkets with full shelves and small numbers of people accompanied the story. The only proviso is for folks like me who purchase more imported goods (chips, peanut butter, etc) as prices may go up and supplies may dwindle.

Yes peg. Many fear economic depression leading to looting and the such. So many first time gun buyers, probably most being those that once were "against guns". Turns out many are shocked there is a waiting period.

          • For me the virus hasn't really been much of an issue, but here's what's been happening so far.

The school I work for had a second week long spring break to see how the virus was going around. During this time all the custodians were disinfecting everything around. Right now all classes are going remote, although I have heard that they might be opening up laboratory classes to very few students, as you can't really do those over the internet. After that the school stopped all planned events for the next two months, including graduation. With that it's hard to say what will happen with us custodians. We have been assure no one will be fired, but it's hard to say if we'll get paid for the days off or not (we do get paid for snow days or random days we can't come in, like the time someone called in a fake shooter/bomb threat). I think they'll keep us around for maybe another week or two, then maybe stop us coming in for less days and then just stop altogether. I guess I'll find out about the pay or not, but the good thing is I have a lot saved up so I should be good for six months at least. Plus, if we did have weeks or months off of work I do have some things I would like to catch up on, like movies, games, writing, and sleep.

With me cleaning after the virus, as some people are still in offices and we do have some public still appearing at the school there's a good chance I can get sick. I've accepted that I will most likely get it, so all I can do is wash my hands, don't touch my face, not make out with sick people (not like I've had the problem of making out too much with anyone anyways) and.....that's about it. If one of my coworkers get it I will most likely get it too and I'm okay with that. Hopefully though I can wait to get sick after the school stops us from coming in so I don't have to burn through what little sick time I have right now (burned through a lot in January due to being sick for a week and then dealing with a bed bug infestation. Luckily we earn more than a day a month in sick time.)

In my area things are closing down. Ohio's governor had restaurants and bars mostly stop. That halted a bunch of things for a bit, but now most of those places are going to reopen so that way they can do delivery orders through things like GrubHub. I have seen some people walk right up to a Dunkin' Donuts drive through just to get something.

I went shopping for the first time since the real "panic" set in. Last week it was just toilet paper and paper towels that were affected, but this time (a couple days) at least half of the grocery area of the store was gone. That was a bit of a spook for me, so I grabbed what I could. Of course I am not going to hoard anything, but I did grab more than I usually would, just in case we do have a mandatory two or three week quarantine. So carrying home 60+ pounds of groceries a little under a mile definitely sucked. I'll grab what I can each time I go shopping and that's about it. Maybe I'll get a bit more things I don't usually, like soup or other canned items.

With that said people are definitely freaking out more than they should over this. For most this is just another type of flu, and yes while you can get C-19 multiple times as you don't really build immunity from it like the normal flu, so really it's just about being smart and having some common sense. Those that bought 15 years worth of toilet paper or trying to price gouge masks, sanitizer, disinfectant, and TP are fucking awful people.

Yes, this will affect the world in a big way, a lot of governments out there (China (#1 at this), Russia, Turkey, the U.S., and others) tried to hide this for some dumbass reason, which only made things worse. What we can do now though is stay calm, be smart, wash our hands, stay home while sick, not buy every roll of TP within 100 miles, and try to do what we can to stem the tide until either an anti-viral medication can help against it or a vaccine can come out to completely stop it. Those should be appearing sometime by summer to winter.

It will be a scary time for all of us, but not terrifying. We should be scared a little, but only to the point of caution, not to full blown doomsaying in this time. Unfortunately, some people may die from this, which is a terrible shame, but we can do what we can for those with respiratory and immune deficient disorders by being smart and staying home if you can.

Until then try not to go to the hospital unless truly necessary with this virus, if you are having trouble breathing that's the first sign that you should go, and not just for the cough or fever. Hospitals will need all man power and supplies needed for those that truly need that help.

Now, with all of that said, I hope you are all staying safe. Please don't fall for any of the misinformation going around, like how silver can cure it or various "medications" that haven't been approved by the FDA and/or CDC as you are more likely to waste your money and hurt yourself. Ride this scary wave the best you can with a good book, a few series of stuff, a hobby you forgot you loved, a video game you haven't opened yet, and even rekindling the love for those around you by enjoying their company.

Be safe and try to not get into fist fights over toilet paper or chicken sandwiches.

              • Well we have been on lock down since Friday. I was asked to work from home on Wednesday and it is til further notice. You can now get a misdemeanor for being outside unless it's an emergency, family or work. No social gatherings of any kind. We have been instructed to shelter in place.

Working from home has been really nice. I can sit on conference calls butt ass naked and get to just chill and watch tv or whatever as I monitor my laptop for emails. I've also been suntanning on my balcony.

Only thing that sucks for me is I voluntarily put Uber on hold so that little bit of extra cash flow is cut off for time being.

Our county has been hit hard, it rivals some spots around Atlanta. The cases just keep piling up and more and more deaths are happening here.

                • I was on a diabetes forum where one member reported before going shopping she puts on gloves and an outer layer of clothing. When she returns, she goes to the basement to remove the gloves, shoes, and clothing and then showers before going upstairs. She is now concerned that her eyes were exposed and wants to use ski goggles the next time she goes out.

Is this what we have to look forward to?

Perhaps a paper bag over ones head, with cut outs for the eyes, of course, might help. (Do not try this with a plastic bag.)

                      • It was March 2020 ... The streets were empty, the shops closed, people couldn't get out. But spring did not know, and the flowers began to bloom, the sun shone, the birds sang, the swallows would soon arrive, the sky was blue, the morning arrived early.
It was March 2020 ... Young people had to study online, and find occupations at home, people could no longer go shopping, or go to the hairdresser. Soon there would be no more room in hospitals, and people continued to get sick. But spring did not know, the time to go to the garden arrived, the grass greened.
It was March 2020 ... People have been put in lockdown. to protect grandparents, families and children. No more meetings or meals, family celebrations. The fear became real and the days were therefore similar. But spring did not know, apples, cherry trees and others bloomed, the leaves grew. People started reading, playing with their families, learning a language, singing on the balcony inviting neighbors to do the same, being supportive and focusing on other values. People realized the importance of health, of suffering, of this world that had stopped, of the economy that has plummeted. But spring didn't know. the flowers gave way to the fruit, the birds made their nest, the swallows had arrived.

Then the day of liberation came, people found out on TV, the virus had lost, people took to the streets, sang, cried, kissed their neighbors, without masks or gloves. And that's when summer came, because spring didn't know. He continued to be there despite everything, despite the virus, fear and death. Because spring didn't know, he taught people the power of life.Everything's gonna be fine, stay home, protect yourself, and enjoy life.

                        • Dallas County residents ordered to stay home as new shelter-in-place rules are put in place, starting 12pm Monday, the 23rd, for a tentative 2 weeks.
Groceries, gasoline, pharmacies, food to go/take out food, other essential services not included.

The goal is to minimize use of hospital resources/ prevent hospitals being over run, in the more populated areas.

The escalation puts an end to social and community gatherings, including weddings and funerals. Residents may exercise and walk their pets outside, however, they must stay at least six feet away from others.(safe space). Religious services must be televised and must limit staff on-site to 10. Elective surgery and dental work must be rescheduled.

                          Works for me.

                              • South Korea updates:

The gov't is considering closing Elementary/Middle/High schools until the fall. No determination yet.

Celtrion CEO has said that his company will have a clinical trials of a treatment by July.

The number of new infections has been going down steadily for 12 days, Monday had 64, and was the second day in a row with less than 100. With those "recovered" far outpacing the infected (257 on Monday for a total of 3,166).

The nation's total infections are at 8,961 (47 from abroad).

So far, 118 people, mostly elderly patients with underlying illnesses, have died.

The number of people under quarantine and being checked for the virus is 13,628 as of Sunday, down 912 from the day before.

The country has tested a total of 338,036 suspected cases, with 315,447 testing negative.

There has been a small spike in cases in the country. Many due to repatriation of a number of folks who were stuck abroad (Italy, Spain, Middle East, etc). The first cases of foreigners (like me) who have contracted the disease happened over the weekend. Here is the irony: 3 UN workers (who work down the street from me) contracted the virus while in Geneva Switzerland. Then brought it back here.

There is an ongoing push to shut down all churches, with the gov't promising legal action.

The US gov't has asked all citizens to return to the States. Many visiting students here now, and many visiting scholars. The students (that I talk to) are considering going back, but mostly on a case to case basis in order to be with family. The scholars (I talk with online and in person) pretty much all say "Hell, no! I'll stay here where it's under control."

The gov't put together and pushed through a supplementary budget of 11 billion to help folks in need. Now they are pushing through a second supplementary budget of 79 billion to stave of financial ruin.

The president and high ranking officials have pledged to return 30% of their monthly salary over the next four months to help fund nationwide efforts to combat coronavirus.

Enforced isolation will continue for all incoming travelers. Everyone is check upon arrival, then put into quarantine for 24 hours. Then allowed to go to residence if cleared, but asked to self isolate for 14 days.

My wife has a big job interview on Thursday.
