I have had conversations with friends and other people I know about the current situation and I have gotten the same response from everyone. No one I know or anyone I've spoken to knows anyone who has gotten COVID-19 or knows someone who has died from it.

I'm not saying that this isn't real or that it's a conspiracy or anything like that. I'm just wondering how much truth is being told about it. There are reports of hospitals full and so many deaths they don't have places to keep the bodies. And then I see things online where people are filming empty hospitals and talking to emergency responders who haven't seen the extent of what is being reported.

I've seen a random person on social media talking about a spouse or someone that had it and recovered but when any little thing happens anywhere the internet and social media is flooded with things about it. I haven't seen that with the current situation besides people talking about how bored they are sitting home everyday.

I have a lot of things like this to discuss but don't want to make this too long. Just wanted to put this out there because it's something I've been thinking about. This forum has always been a great place for discussions and help with everything, not just PE and it reaches so many people in different parts of the world. I am doing my part and staying home and following all the rules to get us past this. I just wanted to ask since this reaches so many people in different places.

Do you know anyone that has gotten COVID-19? Do you believe the situation is what it is being made out to be?

I am in the United States and would love to hear from people in other countries, as well as in the US. It's one thing to hear a bunch of stuff on the internet from sources you don't know if you can trust, so it would be nice to get some insight from you guys on this forum.

I hope everyone is well and you and your family are staying safe and healthy.
You can look at the statistics and put it all in perspective. The first known case was in mid-November - 5 months ago. Since then, there have been 1.5M reported cases and 90K case fatalities. Compare that with other viruses and diseases.

If every time there was a report of another case or death, they also reported how many new influenza cases and deaths occurred in the same period, the whole thing wouldn't be quite as scary.

    • Heard the neighbours arguing today . I recognised the argument I have had it myself .

The virus has made it more common .

The older generation were saying when we go we will leave you money . The younger aying your money is your own for gods sake spend it.

      • Okay this virus shit is really pissing me off. Last night I tried to get a bit frisky with the wife. She gently nudged me away. What? She looked at me and said she was just trying practice what all the signs in our area are saying;; stop the spread. So I looked at her, brushed my handover her stomach and said signs also said to flatten the curve. The fight started shortly after that!

In addition to the 90K fatalities, there are another 40K in serious condition. Generally speaking, that's about 1%. Even if the fatality rate stays around 1% (and I believe it will ultimately end up between 2-3% when all's said and done), that's still 10 times as deadly as the flu, which has a death rate of about .1%. Whatever the case, 97-99% survival rate doesn't sound horrifying ... until of course it's you or a loved one dying.

This thing spreads a lot more rapidly than influenza as well. Typically with the flu, you're down for the count by the time you're contagious. With this thing, you can walk around completely a-symptomatic and spread it all around.

Now, all that said, I'm not really seeing an apocalyptic ending here, but I don't live in New York City either. It does seem to me the situation is broadly different in different locations, and it makes sense to have somewhat different policies in different areas.

Bottom line is, though, this novel coronavirus is not really comparable to influenza.

          • Went grocery shopping today with face covered and gloves during early morning senior time. Everyone in the store was similarly dressed and there were arrows on the floor so all would move in the same direction. Unfortunately, the produce area had limited offerings - no zucchini and no mushrooms. The paper products aisle was empty except for 12 rolls of paper towels with a limit of two per customer. I still was able to spend $200 which, hopefully, will hold me for a week.

Yeah, I got into a huge fight with my wife last weekend, because I sort of chuckled at her when she expressed concern that our son shouldn't go out to her mom's to spend some time. We don't really practice social distancing among the three of us at the house, and the wife and I have had sex once since all this started (thanks be to God!). I have been out to the grocery and liquor stores, but otherwise none of us has really been around anyone. The guidelines in our state are something along the lines of "Go do what you have to do, but stay in as much as possible. If you do go out, practice the six foot social distancing. Where that's not practical (grocery store, etc), wear a mask."

For what it's worth, I do think my son will going to my mother-in-law's this weekend, so I think I ultimately won that fight. Good luck, brother!

              • Make sure you use lots of mouth sanitizer. My brand is Meyers Dark Rum. Take a mouthful, swish for 30 seconds then swallow. Do that 5 times a day to keep your mouth sanitized.

Do you hum “Happy Birthday” three times while swishing?

Sure. And, just to be clear, I'm not saying that C19 is similar to the flu. I was trying to say that if you look at the cases and case fatalities without context (and certainly with the hyperbole that talking heads add to the story) it can appear terrifying. If, instead, you consider all of the statistics relative to other diseases, illnesses, deaths that occur every day, it's not the scary end-of-the-world plague that many portray it to be. Right now we're all acting as though everyone is radioactive - some kind of sci-fi movie sh!t - and as though if we don't implode the economy, corpses will pile up in the streets. All I was saying was that, if you consider all of the information - all of it - and not just the sound bites, it's not terrifying.

And just a quick aside... A controlled study in Germany shows a CFR of .37%. That's about 4X the seasonal flu. Obviously, that's just one study but, again.... context.

                          • In our small town in Oregon. Not much has changed. Yes, people with masks here and there. Yes, some social distancing. But no on the staying at home. I see just as many people driving around as I would any other day. We have only one confirmed case in our county. It's been that way for about three weeks now.

Yes, I concede your general point. Not ebola, not the black plague. But they are literally having to dig mass graves for "unclaimed" bodies in NYC.

I will push back against the notion that "we're all acting as though everyone is radioactive". I agree with proactive in that not a whole lot has changed where I'm at (Little Rock, AR). Schools are closed, no one can go to restaurants or concerts (large events in general), so that's bad news for hospitality workers. But we are getting out, supporting local restaurants with take out or delivery orders, getting gas, getting groceries, getting pet supplies, and so on. My lawn service is still coming around. We are still planning to replace our pool liner once it warms back up. The economy is still moving in spite the harm to hospitality (and probably a fair amount of retail workers).

I do wear a mask to the grocery store, but I'm still looking people in the eye and doing the nod of acknowledgement and talking to people I know. The weirdest thing about wearing the mask is that I feel like no one can see me smile at them, which is too bad.

Anyway, I have a feeling this "how we treat each other" factor varies widely from place to place, just as the actual infection situation does.

And I do agree, the talking head types tend not to help the situation, but that's nothing new.
