Then why do so many Canadians cross the border into the U.S. for medical reasons?

          Good Morning Pirate,

Although the Canadian Healthcare System is certainly not without its problems, the ongoing idea that Canadians are flocking to the US for medical reasons is actually a myth.

Myths about Canada, US Healthcare Debunked

Also, in this morning's news...it seems that American political and consumer activist, Ralph Nadar was in Canada earlier this week outlining the advantages of the Canadian Healthcare system over Obamacare. Here is what he had to say:

22 ways the Canadian health-care system is better than Obamacare

Finally, here is another interesting article:

THE POLITICS OF CANADA'S HEALTH CARE SYSTEM

          Just some food for thought...

            Fair enough TPW,
I was unaware of the myth of flocking Canadians. My comment was based on my purely personal and limited experience with anything associated with Canada's health care system. I am sure that it is perfectly adequate for the majority of citizens. My point was simply that many Canadians do get frustrated with that system and opt to come south to enjoy ours.
As for your system being superior to ObamaCare, of that I have very little doubt. Of course, you have the significant advantage of a much smaller population. Contrary to popular belief, a number of states have been experimenting with a variety of systems (Hawaii and Massachusetts come to mind. Both states' systems have their supporters and detractors.) Personally, I think that state action was a much more appropriate method of addressing the health care "problem." If I remember correctly, the population of Canada is slightly less than that of California. Trying something different within California would have been a big challenge but at least the political class would only be experimenting on 37 million or so people and not 350 million.
Keep in mind, that this issue was not something driven by jillions of people without access to healthcare. The drivers are a handful of professional politicians conspiring with insurance companies (who have had to subsidize the uninsured but now are guaranteed profits) and hospitals (who are understandably frustrated with providing free emergency room healthcare to those unable to pay.)
I apologize for my negative attitude on this subject. ObamaCare has been a very unwelcome, frustrating, time consuming, and expensive intrusion into my life and I deeply resent the self important arrogant bastards who decided that they know what is best for everyone else and exempt themselves and their cronies (unions, government employees, and other big donors to the DNC) from their mess.

There is certainly no need to apologize Pirate; I was simply providing some clarification and food for thought; particularly the last article which highlights the problems with the Canadian Healthcare system and more importantly, the negative effects Obamacare will ultimately have on us as well.

You are correct, the Canadian population is only about 1/10 of the United States. It is one of this reasons that Canadians are either sent by their physicians or choose to receive treatment in the United States; the greater number of necessary machines (MRIs, etc) as well as more available beds.

Like I said, our healthcare is not without it's own problems.

Well I got my new healthcare plan. Far more expensive and none of the docs my family uses are included and there's nothing I can do about it. Thank you to all those folks that just wanted to mess stuff up!

To all of you that support Obamacare I want you to take your head out of your butts, pick up a paper or go on the web and look, read, and understand what is going on with the VA hospitals. The VA is the largest government healthcare system in the county ( soon to be replaced by Obamacare) and one of te largest in the world. See how our government runs healthcare. Vets are waiting months for even a check up appointment, some have actually died waiting months to be seen, over stuffed by beaurocrats who can't get fired and could care less about patients, secret lists so the employees still look like their making their quotas so they get their bonus, a shortage of doctors and nurses, delayed or denied treatment, and the list goes on. Read it. This is not political. What makes you think the government can run the rest of the countries healthcare any better? You tell me!

                    • I'd think the postal system would be a fine example. Still unable to get financially healthy.

Let's just remember who the democrats had to negotiate with in the house for years to try and get a good healthcare bill passed because they wouldn't stop bitching and did everything at every turn to fuck with it, and then when it finally goes public they play dumb and act like Obama dreamed it up one night and just announced it would be a law?

I'm sorry for those of you that have lost your plan or aren't happy with it or whatever, but the fact of the matter is that more people's premiums and costs have gone down than otherwise. And numerous people who didn't have healthcare before now can afford it? The real problem with the US is everyone is so damn selfish. I'm not saying that you have to pay for everyone else, but to bitch about your plan being dropped (likely because a more cost effective one was put in place) just so you can be mad at "those damn commie liberals" is ridiculous.

And just because "me and this one guy I know" had an issue with the implementation with the Affordable Care Act (can we call it by its real name for once?) doesn't mean it's an ineffective system.

                          • The president, no not you, has come out to say he is comfortable calling it Obamacare so that should not be an issue.
My plan, and the one that I GIVE to my employees cost me 3 grand more for my family and 1500 bucks per employee for less coverage. Oh we got dropped because out former plan which was cheaper with better coverage did not have maternity care and none of my employees are young enough to have kids. So who is my money subsidizing and just maybe I should drop their coverage and save money. That works.

Do you have the option of dropping health care as a benefit at your business and pay the employee what you would have towards their premiums?

I would be very careful being so quick to criticize people, you might end up in an uncomfortable position sometime in the future due to the very people you trusted. Then you will be calling the crazy's and "conspiracy theorists" right and kissing their feet.
