As a fitness trainer and fitness nutrition consult er , I d like to speak a little bit about body building supplements and try to save your health and wallets.
1)QUALITY OF SUPPLEMENTS
This area is very vital and delicate.
There are a lot of companies that are making supplements now days.
Unfortunately very few of them can be trusted.
People think that all supplements brands are the same and that all of them are offering the same thing. The truth is far from that.
I have a friend that owns a body building store and we sent some protein powders brands to the chemical laboratory.
The result was that almost all of them(including very famous and old companies like “Muscle tech” and “ON” had the HALF protein than they claimed (eg. the scoup should have 24gr and it had 12gr)and they had also traces of anabolic substances.
The German body building supplements(“Inkosport” and Body “Attack”)were a little better in quality and quantity.
This is the reason why all these supplements are so cheap comparing to the pharmaceutical ones like SOLGAR and LAMBERTS.
So the conclusion and my suggestion is that IF you really need a supplement, buy ONLY pharmaceutical brands.
2) THE REAL NEED OF SUPPLEMENTING
You really have to understand that the supplement companies have a huge marketing campaign.
They are claiming things that are not true.
One good example is the types of protein powders.
-Whey
-Casein
-Albumin
-ETC…
They are claiming (for marketing purposes) that the whey is better after training because it is absorbed faster and that your muscles needs a faster absorption protein immediately after training because of the 45 mins anabolic window.
Well…guess what?!
The so called anabolic window does not exist!
All latest scientific researches proved that the anabolic window is a myth and that it does not matter to run like the devil and eat protein ( or use a protein powder) immediately after training.
The researches showed that the only thing that matters is the DAILY TOTAL PROTEIN CONSUMPTION and not the time that you are gonna consume it.
So …fast and slow proteins types have zero meaning. Its all about marketing purposes.
Another good example is the use of BCAAs.
There is so much marketing behind this supplement…
Do you know where you can find the grams of the BCAAs from the supplements in food?
Just 1 hole egg contains the BCAAs of a supplement dosage!
And the food is always gonna be better than any supplement!
I could go on and on with examples of how much the marketing is so fake…but I think you got the point.
What you really need to understand is that if a person is having a bodybuilding nutrition plan , then all the supplements are useless.
The only supplement that really worth’s and you can not get effective the quantity of it from real food is CREATINE.
Some people that are on a body building nutrition and they are eating 400gr of meat and 8 egg whites per day (this was just an average example on the total amount of protein foods) they are supplementing with ARGININE.
What they do not know is that they are consuming about 11 grams of ARGININE from their nutrition per day which is HUGE ! So they really don t need extra supplement for it.
Another issue is that these companies have spead all these years thatyou need a lot of protein per day in order to gain muscles.
This is also marketing for buying protein powders…
The latest researches showed that the hypertrophyis happening with just 1,3 grams of protein per every body kilogram and NOT 2,0 grams or higher that the supplements companies are recommending.
What people also don t know is that higher dose of daily protein creates problems like ammonia in the blood and suppressed kidneys.
People that could benefit from supplements are the ones that have a shittynutrition in their lifes and people that have some type on deficiencyon something.
That was my 2 cents guys.
Be careful of WHAT and of HOW MUCH you put in your body.
