And here comes yogurt, the bacteria converts lactose to lactic acid, help in absorption and digestion of milk and other food too, make sure you pick a brand with live cultures.

Preferably make it at home, and if you wait on it for 24 hours or more, the bacteria will convert ALL lactose to lactic acid, so you get more benefits and no trouble if you're lactose intolerant. It will taste a bit more acidic/sour.

@The Sperminator: milk was "designed" to boost the baby's growth as it us filled with all the basic building blocks the baby's body needs, but you are an adult and adults are not supposed to drink milk at all.

Don't forget to keep the milk in a tepid environment (about 37 degrees Celcius) in order to enhance the yeast's metabolism. Another way to do it would be to buy lactase pills and take them as you drink your milkshake.

When making yogurt, optimum temperature is between 105°F and 112°F, going above 118°F would kill the bacteria.

          In Celsius: 40.5°, 44.4° and 47.7° respectively

Let's not forget we're not "supposed" to eat anything. Health is merely an idea of homeostasis in the body and life quality and is relative to the ever changing environment we live in.

How hot is the pasteurization process? And, wouldn't that process just kill off a whole bunch of good stuff?

Pasteurization typically uses temperatures below boiling, since at very high temperatures, casein micelles will irreversibly aggregate, or "curdle"
Pasteurization kills the bacteria found in milk, but when making yogurt, you add 1 table spoon of active culture per liter of milk, in an appropriate temperature said bacteria feeds on lactose and produces lactic acid, this keeps happening until conditions are not in its favor or the lactose was all converted

Making yogurt is another good use for a heating pad

If I may add: yogurt increases Testosterone and Fertility and by making more calcium available for absorption it helps raise metabolism and helps with weight loss

Or even better, make it at home and get a lot more lactic acid

                        I agree with many posts.
I think humans are the only living things that drink milk as adults and from another species.

I think the biggest thing that is overlooked when it comes to health and nutrition is the acid/alkaline balance.

Generally, for optimum health, you should eat a very (if not only) alkaline diet. Acidity in the body is a ideal dwelling place for diseases and viruses and such.

                        Quote from online source:
An acidic balance will: decrease the body's ability to absorb minerals and other nutrients, decrease the energy production in the cells, decrease it's ability to repair damaged cells, decrease it's ability to detoxify heavy metals, make tumor cells thrive, and make it more susceptible to fatigue and illness. A blood pH of 6.9, which is only slightly acidic, can induce coma and death.

Acidic foods are generally everything animal, from meats to milks to eggs, and some plant derived foods.

So milk is considered to be an acid forming food in the body.
Though it is considered to have calcium, vitamin d, and protein..which is really good for you..it still debatable as to whether one should drink it.

The crazy part is that since milk is acidifying in the body it causes the body to respond to bring it back up to alkaline state. So the body will use calcium to do so..and the calcium comes from where it's stored..in your bones..so..it's counter productive seeing as the milk depletes the body of calcium..as with any other acidifying food in the body.

So yeah, milk is not very good for you.

I tend to have milk with cereal and I think that's about it. Sometimes a glass here and there. I try to always drink alkaline water everyday to counteract all the acidic foods I eat.

Also quoted from an online source

                            The pH of Yogurt

Plain, unsweetened yogurt has a natural pH of approximately 4.5-5, making it low acidic and within the realm of neutral pH. When sweeteners are added to yogurt, it increases the acid content, so care should be taken when selecting yogurt to maintain an even pH level of six to seven within the body. Remember that acidic foods should always be balanced with high alkaline foods in order to avoid acid build up.

                            Risks of Acidity

An unbalanced pH content can contribute to a number of health problems related to over-acidity. When there is an overabundance of acid in the body and not enough alkalinity, it must compensate by taking essential minerals from bones and organs in order to neutralize the acid and remove it safely from the body. This state is known as acidosis, and it can result in immune deficiency, weight gain, yeast infections, osteoporosis, chronic fatigue and joint pain.

                            Other Alkaline and Neutral Foods

In order to avoid acidosis, include a balance of high alkaline and neutral foods in your diet to give your body the necessary tools to break down acid. Alkaline foods include most fresh vegetables, fresh and dried fruits, almonds, olive and flax seed oil and herb teas. Neutral foods include dairy products and most nuts. Acidic foods include meat, any processed food, beans, coffee, chocolate, pasta, white flour, shellfish and soda.

I don't know if drinking milk is "good" or "bad" for you. I mean, if SOOOO many people have been doing it for SOOOO long, how bad could it possibly be?

I think drinking milk becomes bad when it's done in the excess that our culture allows. Milk is in so many food products that it might become a problem for the digestive tract.
The milk has naturally occurring hormones in it that turn a small calf into a 1-ton bovine. Excessive amounts might fuck up your own hormone balance.
I've read that the calcium found in milk is not bio-available, which means you can't absorb it very efficiently.
The milk itself also tends to irritate and inflame your gut, leaving you prone to more illness.

I've also read that pasteurization helps in making milk a sub-optimal food product because the high temperatures destroy the bacteria in the milk plus the enzymes and nutrients.

Does any of this mean you should *never, ever, under ANY circumstance* ingest milk? No, of course not. Just like everything else, moderate it. There are alternatives to milk, you know. Goats milk is different in makeup. Almond milk is altogether different. Just check the ingredients, sometimes they add in some bullshit you don't want in your system. There's also keffir for a thicker kind of substitute. Just keep your eyes open and alternate between what you eat and cycle through them all.

The bacteria found in yogurt is the "good" probiotic sort that helps in digestion. I've read that having a high amount of these guys in your gut can help you break down and thus absorb protein more efficiently.
