This is a topic I hear discussed a lot in many different venues. The problem I see is many of those talking about it don't seem to have the first clue what respect even is. They repeat phrases like "respect is earned." So they think it's OK to be disrespectful until they believe a person has earned it.

Call me crazy (I'm just a burrito after all) but I try to give people respect until they give me reason to lose it. Assuming positive intent and giving the benefit of a doubt goes a long ways in relationships and interactions with others. You never know what's going on in that persons life to make them behave the way they do; perception is limited and biased based on our own personal lenses formed and shaped by opinions forged by our own personal experiences.

Well, although I don't entirely understand the significance of this thread with all due respect (pun intended ) IMO, based off the title, I agree that you don't beg for respect. Respect is a choice, and begging for it makes you inferior in the other person's eyes because you displaying a type of entitlement that the other person doesn't see fit for you. It's simple psychology, demand respect, don't beg for it.
