I see no benefit to society at all, unless it is to help one another. Currently living in social groups tends to be to suck each other dry if possible. I can't help liking the ideal definition of socialism and communism. Unfortunately neither have been tryed.

Here's one more thing why socialism will not work; it's called human nature.
The world's still a toy if you just stay a boy!

Yes, human nature is why no system works. So why judge socialism so harshly? At least it's beginning premise is for the common good.

Because it handcuffs the meek allowing the strong to go wild.

Socialism has an element of altruism involved, assisting the young to achieve their full potential, looking after the sick until they can look after themselves and allowing the old (me) to live in dignity when they no longer can work. The problem is that a plutarchy arises that fucks everything up for everyone bar themselves. In the long run it does not work, you end up with Animal Farm.

The Socialist movement was very fractious, divisive, lots of infighting. Our brand is better, purer than yours. Soviet Union Communism versus China's Maoist Communism. Look what happened to Trotsky in Mexico. The idealism is okay but the practice is shite.

Credit to the Guardian for this tidbit on Venezuela; government gone awry, to say the least.

Recent headlines from Venezuela read like notes from the apocalypse:

              • On Margarita Island dozens of people waded into the ocean and forced their way aboard a fishing boat, making off with its catch of sardines

              • In the city of Maracay, just west of Caracas, thieves broke into a veterinary school, stole two pregnant thoroughbred horses and slaughtered them for meat.

              • A recent video from the western state of Mérida shows a group of people cornering a cow before stoning it to death as bystanders yell: “The people are hungry!”

There have been previous incidents of looting but analysts fear that the current wave could linger amid the Venezuela’s economic freefall.
President Nicolás Maduro blames the country’s woes on an “economic war” against his government by rightwingers and foreign interests.
But his critics say his government has disrupted domestic food production by expropriating farms and factories. Meanwhile, price controls designed to make food more widely available to poorer people have had the opposite effect: many prices have been set below the cost of production, forcing food producers out of business.

Sadly ... But we should always aim to better ourselves and society.

People need to realise what things are actually worth. What are cars and houses? Tin boxes and bricks. You can't take then with you.

We live in a world always pushing you to buy more and more crap. Work until your nearly in the grave to keep buying this nonsense.

As long as you have more than Mr Jones next door...

Of course I do. I know I'm in the system. Been in the system since my first job at 17 while studying.

But I'm now thinking rather than working to buy fancy things I might like to see my children grow up.

The minute we want better for OUR KIDS that kills socialism right there. Of course we want better for OUR kids. It's instinct. If you have a limited amount of food do we not feed OUR kids and then give whatever excess we have to some other kids that may be hungry? In socialism every thing is shared. If you were they only one who saved food for a time of famine would you want someone to come and take it away from your kids and distribute for the common good? They'd have to kill me first.
Oh we want good things for others but our nature tells us to take care of our own first.

Is that not communism you speak of Cusp?? I think we have different definitions of socialism.

Maybe it's the Anglo/ American difference again.

Like you guys don't have crumpets.

With socialism all good , commodities whether in regard to their production and distribution is all regulated by the state.Socialism is more of an economic system while communism is both economic and political. The bottom line is someone else gets to take your stuff.
