For the record, I am an atheist and did not intend to promote any religious views with my thread. But I'm glad to see such an enthusiastic discussion of the topic.
    Starting (3/14/2011) = 5" x 4"

Why do we die exactly? From a biological point of view, It doesn't really make any sense if we take into account today's standards and the way of living.

This is what I believe is happening: There's one main reason for reproduction, which is to mix the genes so some individuals happen to be immune to some deadly viruses, diseases... to make it through and continue repopulating it's species. Other reason is to replace the ones which died.
With this in mind, what would be the reason for dying? To make room for the new individuals? I guess that makes the most sense.
Now, with the medical advances, we can take out the reasons for reproduction: cures for diseases, other medical conditions... as well as no predators to kill us. Does anybody else sees the magic circle here?

We reproduce for no reason -> we die because we reproduce -> we reproduce in order to replace the dead individuals -> we die because we reproduce...

Don't get me wrong now. I'm not saying we just die in order to make room for new individuals... that's how our genes are programmed. They are killing us for the greater good. And modern man is too young to be evolving it's way out of death's path that quickly.

I was going to make a thread about this so I'll keep it short in here: They found the part of the genome which is making some animals old, they removed it and they lived twice as long. I believe that with time, they'll do the same with us and abolish ageing completely in the following 50 years.

EDIT: Also there is this marine animal which lives infinitely by replacing it's parts. So there's something to research also.

TL;DR: We will probably stop ageing in the near future.
I had a huge conversation about this the other night. On a technicality, humans should be invincible. All of our bodies reproduce living cells, so in the right enviroment, their is TECHNICALLY no reason we should die. We should be able to live for hundreds of years. But we can't do this. Look at todays world, their is to much bad in it to make up for all of the good. We are all going to die, even though with billions of less people, we should be able to stay alive for very very long periods of time. We are built to last forever, but our bodies cannot keep up with our minds.

This sort of edges around the point of what happens AFTER death, and more is just about avoiding death. Which isn't, and never will be possible.

An inspirational thought that comes to mind is: As coal under extreme heat and pressure is forged into a diamond, as are we (in life) into Sparks of the Divine.

Quarzan I am not afraid of dying as far as I am concerned I am living on my life extension. At the time of my car accident back in 1986 I was clinically dead and brought back, since I have lived each day thankful for the extra time and trying to honor the blessing of having my life extended. I am thankful for my beloved husband, my children, family, friends and all those that had crossed my path since they have influenced my life one way or another. If I was gone tomorrow I am confident, I have lived my life a positively as possible. Hopefully my Deity will let me live longer so that I can have a few more years to enjoy my children but if is not to be, I am grateful for the time I have already been granted on this Earth.

Did you have a near death experience when you were dead? What happened?

I had an out of body experience ( I saw the medical personnel working on me to resuscitate). I do not know if that is what you call a near death experience. It was meaningful to me though.

No, there is no such thing as what is described in the movies, it can be due to many things but once you are dead you are dead, you know nothing and you are in a state of permanent sleep. Now that is if you believe in the bible. To say you do but to believe in an out of body experience due to near death would contradict each other.

Now for those that do not believe in God then maybe it is possible, I am a believer but I guess none of us can gtruly know who was right until the end. this is why I choose not to belittle those that do not believe as I do.

We all beleive differently, if she believes she did who am I to say that she did not. I just believe what I believe. We sleep until the resurrection.

A near death experience isn't proof of anything other than an individual didn't die, It doesn't prove that the experience was internal or external from their body. Whether that experience was profound and meaningful to them is a different conversation.

The same as someone describing how they were abducted by aliens and probed while under hypnosis isn't proof that they were indeed abducted by aliens.

But for arguments sake lets say that your conciousness can cohesively survive the death of your physical body in some form if even for only a while.
This doesn't prove any religious idea of heaven or hell to be true, nor does it prove the existence of a god in either the theist or deist sense and nor does it prove the moral teachings by any monotheist religion or other to be correct.

Perhaps Mrs can tell us some more and give a direction to this debate.

Near death experiences are physiological, caused by the pituitary gland.

When subjects are given doses of DMT and deprived of oxygen the exact same thing happens.
