A scam that is common is aussie is for them to advertise a job and when you answer the advert they try to sell overpriced training.

Sweet! I found marijuana in the garage after my step-brother and this new guy cleaned it out, and they cleaned out the garage so badly that all the garbage is in the drive way and you can easily see it from the street.

So glad I bought this tablet to take pictures with and I'm showing this to my land lord and if nothing is thrown away by Monday morning I'm calling the city on my own house to force something to happen.


Oh and that Wal-Mart job I found for my youngest brother, he got fired the first day for using inapropriate language and falling asleep during orientation. So now I get to find him ANOTHER job while looking for one of my own, and there's no real headway in that department either.

Forget coming out of this smelling like roses I'm hoping I get out of this smelling like pond scum.

Hey Dontrike, I'm just now jumpin in reading this and have not read a lot. Man sorry to hear about your struggles. There have been several times where life knocked me off my feet and I had to start all over. My philosophy on jobs is that ANY job is better than NO job. Once I was working for a major company making good money and good benefits and got knocked off my feet and had to start all over. I took the first job that could hire me, I did not care where or what it was (just had to be legal lol). Got a job in fast food. While working fast food I was constantly searching for the next move. Each job being a step up. I finally managed to step my way back up and even surpassed the previous job at the major company. The really cool thing is that all the experience I gained from the "mediocre" jobs actually gave me the experience needed for the current job I am holding. My resume would not have sold if it weren't for all those small jobs that I had. Keep doing the best you know how to do and trust that somehow, someway it will all come together in the end and make sense even though nothing makes sense right now. Didn't mean to rant but I have passion for this kind of stuff due to my own personal experiences. Wish you the best of luck in you efforts. Looking forward to congratulating you when you land that dream job!!! Don't lose hope.

As much as I hate calling I must agree that I will have to start doing that far more often, done it a few times and told the job either didn't exist or was taken long before I applied, which makes me wonder why they didn't take down the listing.

Going to many of thesse places will be difficult as I can't ask that many people to get to these places, as most don't have a bus route. I'll be able to get rides to the interview and the job until I can get my car, but I can't ask folks to keep taking me some place for a minimal increase in the chances I'll get it.

Explain this to me. How come applying isn't good enough? Why is calling needed? Doesn't that come across as annoying which then they would not want to hire you so they wouldn't have to hear from you again? At what point is too much calling or is there a thing as too much calling? I honestly do not understand why calling shows you want the job more than anyone else that applied, it seems like you're impatient or incredibly desperate.

This then makes me wonder why I can't seem to grasp these ideas that others have been getting for decades.

It's not about desperation. It is about follow through. About drive, having goals and doing what it takes to meet them. It's about making the HR person's job easier. HR doesn't have to call you because there you are calling. It puts the onus on you not them. It also makes them feel you actually want to work with them.

Right now, if I have to take one of those dead end kinds of jobs just so I can get by until the next one, I keep thinking I have to stick to that job for 1-3 years just so the next job could even consider me. Is it fine to leave a job quickly after finding something better?

I can see the benefits of it, but I seriously do not understand how this became a thing. Why should a potential employee make it easier for an employee that works there? Why can I not understand things people have been doing for decades? The fuck is wrong with me? (Well a lot, but that's besides the point.)

As for having drive and goals, well I think we can all agree those left me like the abusive ex wife that took the house, kids, and all the money. Right now my only "goal" is having the basic requirements of living, like a job. The fact I'm aiming so low and it's still unobtainable should tell you something.

They are, for temporary positions up until the beginning of January. Plus, working for Wal-Mart is a one way trip to nowhere. I have worked for dead end jobs in the past, but Wal-Mart is THE dead end job where the only promotion you get is to store greeter when you've worked there until you're 65. I can't work in a place like that again.

I know if I do I'm going to be there for 15 years in the same position until one day I just buy some rope and a new chair and go on a permanent vacation. So you're thinking "Why not get a promotion" or "You won't be there forever", but I know I will because I'm an extreme creature of habit and get comfortable with shit situations, and the misery that comes with them, and that I'll stay there until I go fucking insane. Shit, I stayed with an abusive parent for over a decade, at Wendy's for 3 years even though I was looking at box cutters like they were my only answer, and at my current job for 3 years even though I wasn't getting paid, so I know I'd do the same thing at Wal-Mart. I just can't do that again, I need to have a job I can stand, one I can even enjoy, one that won't drive me fucking batty, and one that I can turn into something real, not stack cereal on shelves for a decade until I can get "Senior Shelf Stocker". I can't keep doing these dead end jobs with no way to move up in the world. People keep telling me that I'm worth something, that I should go for what I deserve, so that is what I am doing now. I am going for what I deserve and what I'm great at. I deserve a decent job and finally the ability to move up, even a little, in the world and in life. (This is where I realized I went on a little bit of a rant and know no one wants to see it, so I blanked it out.)

I need something real, not something I'm going to hate from minute one.

Here's my rant - car insurance companies!!! Bloody work of the devil.

My renewal comes in yesterday (they automatically renew you unless you contact them which means 40 minutes or so on hold to a contact centre).

It's £493 for fully comp which is good however I've been driving 20 years and never caused an accident.

I go on a comparison site, same insurer offers me the same cover for £290!!!

I ring them up, hold on the line and am advised that's for 'New customers! Nothing for loyalty these days. So I say cancel the auto renewal on the 3rd of Dec and take the insurance out with my existing insurance company online.

It's madness. But it did save me £200.

That's some weird M.C. Escher line of work they make you do to save money, and it's a little weird it keeps going up despite your decent driving. Insurance companies make no sense, but we need them anyways.

After six months of waiting for my GI Bill which affected every aspect of life and caused my grades to sink... I had to drop one class because of stress and I thought I might not be able to sign up for next semester... It finally came through. I got over $9,200 this weekend... Enough to pay everyone back, pay rent in advance, afford Netflix and Hulu, continue with school, and put a over $6000 in savings, and take my girlfriend out to dinner.

This is all strictly MY OPINION. While it is good to show that you are a committed worker, I have a hard time believing that any company would ever criticize you for continuously trying to better yourself. There are several ways you could spin it if questioned about you jumping around. Obviously, the first way is to explain that your constantly trying to better yourself. Who can blame you for moving from fast food to sales or whatever is better than fast food where you have better pay and benefits? Another way to spin it is that you went in to the job, learned all the skills you needed there and moved on to learn new skills. Get creative, they love that.

Don't limit yourself to the obvious scope of a job. It's easy to see fast food as flippin burgers, fryin chicken, and asking if you want that value sized. Using fast food as an example:
- You learn customer relations
- You lean how to focus on quality giving the right product at the right temperature in the right quantity asked for.
- You learn food safety. Holding times for products, the critical temperatures to prevent micros, first in first out (FIFO), cleaning and sanitization.
- You learn teamwork, every role has it's function and with out all the roles working together the establishment cannot function.
I think I made my point.

The key is, everything you do can have multiple applications. It's not the actual act of doing a task, it's the mindset and behaviors that are being learned.

Another thing is when you go in for an interview or write a resume, think of yourself as a product you are trying to sell. Confidence carries farther than the most elaborately written resume. Believe in yourself and you will have no problem selling yourself to them at the interview.

And once you land that dream job, I encourage you to never pass down an opportunity to grow even if it will be challenging. If you do that, you will find yourself moving up quickly. Also, starting off on your journey, I encourage you to have the same work ethic at the "fast food" jobs as you plan on having at the "cooperate" jobs. Work ethics are learned behaviors and if you start off sloppy you will most likely finish sloppy. It also helps with your confidence moving upwards because you can say that you excelled when little was entrusted to you and that you will continue to excel when you are entrusted with a lot.
